  8. actualblanketgremlin said: @fieldsofeternalfortune (2/2) and even the reprints of the older stories had something in the introduction about the xenophobia of the genre. Now, admittedly, my scope is limited to the titles my particular bookshop stocked back in 2019, I’m sure there are jackasses out there trying to say that the xenophobia is correct. But on the whole, as far as I know, they do. Loudly and freely.
  9. actualblanketgremlin said: @fieldsofeternalfortune I understand, but I haven’t found that to be the case. I admit I might have a limited experience in this regard, and I absolutely agree with you that it’s baked into the genre, but also I worked for a specifically horror-themed bookstore in 2018 and 2019, and all the newer titles we stocked had essentially a disclaimer saying that either on the back or in the front cover blurb. Most of the titles specifically were subverting those themes (½)
  10. fieldsofeternalfortune said: @actualblanketgremlin The place of frustration that I’m coming from is that I want authors and readers to be able to freely talk about and acknowledge the xenophobic themes that are built into the genre, and that ARE a part of the work they make or consume, and be able to admit that Lovecraft was not just a small ugly stain on the genre but instead a logical part of the pattern weaved into an ongoing tapestry of fiction.
  11. fieldsofeternalfortune said: @actualblanketgremlin It’s not that I don’t applaud writing that intentionally examines and subverts issues in a specific writer’s popularized tropes and themes. But I think that framing the issue so specifically as a battle to be won against one dead author, whose racism etc was so absurdly blatant, creates blinders to the systematic issues and allows anything not as bad as The Absolute Worst to be falsely characterized as “pure”.
  12. actualblanketgremlin said: @fieldsofeternalfortune Very true, but also look at Lovecraftian fiction written in the last 10 years or so. The Ballad of Black Tom and Heroes Of Red Hook (for example) deliberately subvert Lovecraft’s racism/homophobia. It’s being done, and done well (Black Tom has won about a half dozen awards at this point). A little bit of hope, with regards to Lovecraftian fiction. Let’s keep the momentum going!
  13. fieldsofeternalfortune said: I think this post really misses the big picture in regards to Lovecraft - that xenophobic themes have permeated or been the basis for horror since its beginnings as a genre. Ofc it’s important to point out Lovecraft’s specific blatant racism, but he didn’t write in a vacuum, and the lasting love for his works should help prompt you to take a good hard look at the issues of racism and xenophobia baked into the genre, especially if you’re a writer.
