She was 14 man

This was very deliberate on the part of the creators when you think about it. Other girls her age in the series don’t wear makeup or at least don’t wear as much. (Ex. Katara, Ty Lee, Mai and evening Suki when she’s not wearing her Kyoshi makeup) With Azula the large amounts of make up are another way to show that she’s trying to grow up too fast. She’s an angry, damaged, little girl who uses the illusion of perfection to protect her ego, sanity and perhaps her life from an abusive father who has no use for children that don’t obey and live up to his expectations.

#also people who comment shes prettier this way are missing the point #that type of attitude plays into girls feeling their value is based upon their looks #and is even more insidious when applied to young girls #ultimately whether or not someone wears makeup is up to them but in the context of a story like this its used as a story telling device #which so very evident when you compare her to girls in the series close to her age #like katara or even ty lee or mai @rossithepixie 

I was gonna make a separate post about this exact thing that i saw happening on this post. A lot of people commented that she looked prettier, but that wasn’t my intention at all. At first I did it out of curiosity, because her make-up is such a clear decision in her character design that speaks a lot about who she is, or well, who she’s trying to be. I wasn’t prepared for such a contrast. It wasn’t because she looked prettier, its because she looked so young. Rossithepixie basically said everything i wanted to with these edits.
