The mythical island of Brasil, just west of Ireland, which showed up on maps throughout the early modern period, as late as the 1860s. Stories about the island said that it was covered in fog for all but one day every seven years and that it was impossible to travel to. A number of expeditions were undertaken to travel to the island, and a number of people came back to Ireland claiming to have seen, but not visited, the island.
