my favorite part of Knives Out was how they essentially had the characters look directly into the camera and say “heads up: this prop knife is our Chekhov’s gun and will be important later” and then move on

bold. unsubtle. I love it.

The best mysteries have extremely satisfying set up and pay off. It rewards the audience for paying attention. If you make unsubtle then a wider audience will come away with that feeling.

Yeah, Knives Out was satisfying in part because it was fairly easy to solve along with (and sometimes slightly ahead of) the characters and had plenty of foreshadowing. I think the best mysteries are ones where the audience is able to solve about 75%-85% of the mystery themselves from clues provided just from paying attention, with the remaining mystery being much less obvious but still theoretically accessible without the final reveal. Mysteries which are completely inaccessible to the audience until the ~final twists~ are just annoying.

it’s ok ship you can say bbc sherlock

BBC Sherlock isn’t more clever or a better detective than anyone else, he just has cybernetic zoom/enhance eyeballs and is a very lucky guesser

You know what show has super high perception that isnt shit? psyche. because the guy notices things that are off but doesnt know why or how they all connect until he asks about what they are from his smarter but also idiotic friend.
