Silver Tongue
So the big plot twist of Cruella is the reasons she wants to kill dalmatians for a coat is because her mom was killed by dalmatians as a kid.

Oh silly, I’m not falling for another rickroll today!

I didn’t doubt that was the actual plot, but because it was called out as a Rickroll I had to click to be disappointed in the lack of Rick astley

I can’t believe I’m about to say this, on a post about dalmatians killing Cruella De Vil’s mom, but apparently… Once Upon A Time did this already and did it better so… uhh… okay…

“In 1920s England, a young Cruella De Vil is being mistreated by her mother Madeline as she instructs her Dalmatians to chase her daughter, and is locked in the attic in the same setting that resembles the novel Flowers in the Attic.”

“When Madeline returns home, Cruella was ready for her, and eventually kills her mother by controlling her Dalmatians and commanding them to attack her.”

So Disney ripped off Once Upon A Time….

as much as I hate on Once Upon A Time, they generally handled villains pretty well, knowing when to redeem someone, when to have a somewhat redeemed villain slip up again, and when to make you think they were doing that then pull the rug out from under you. it took literally seasons to build up various twists and moments of growth with Regina, and then she still slipped up sometimes (iirc, it’s been quite a while since I watched it), same with all of the Rumpelstiltskin arcs and episodes devoted to explaining why he was the way he was… that isn’t to say that they were the best arcs in the world, but they genuinely tried. and they knew that a twist that Cruella killed her mom, even if you sympathise with why, is better than what this film seems to be using a similar plot to do.

“they generally handled villains pretty well”

to clarify, I’m British, “pretty well” means like “eh it’s alright”, and was in comparison to the disney cinematic universe. but you’re right on this point, I think they do sometimes exhibit a baseline degree of competence in executing some of their redemption arcs, but maybe the world lowered my standards too much. this is the only valid criticism of me on this entire post. there is no discourse in ba sing se.

Not to add to the spoilers but in Cruella the dalmatians do kill her mom but she doesn’t hate them for it. She ends the movie adopting three Dalmatians (that could be the ones that killed her mom except Dalmatians don’t live for that long, so it makes more sense for them to be the next generation) as her guard dogs. So the movie does NOT explain anything about the coat and why she would want it other than the original explanation: “it would look rad”.

Cruelly in OUAT was just a crazy bitch and I loved her for it.
