I reported a racist manager to hr for making a slavery joke at my expense. “Somehow” that information became available to the whole store and I was retaliated against by my co workers and management for a month and a half.

It was effecting my health so I quit. I posted about it on fb and it’s going viral now because the store is very popular.

Not sure if I want to post it here yet. I did all the adult things you are supposed to do (paper work and eeoc stuff) but I’m really upset. I hate that I had to do any of this in the first place.

Let it rip!!! This behavior needs to blasted! I stand with you and others will too!

OP, you have a hell of a lawsuit here. I don’t work for Target, but I am a shift manager, and I literally had to take a class on this last month.

1) Discrimination. This is extremely obvious. You were targeted because of your race/color. I’m white and someone making that same comment to me would make no sense. It relies upon you being Black to be “funny” and so is racially-motivated.

2) Anything you take to HR should remain confidential. There is no “except” or “but” here. HR is like Vegas. What happens there stays there. Releasing this information is thus retaliation, which is also very, very illegal.

OP, speaking as someone who is extremely invested in workers’ rights (it’s rather hazy if I qualify as a “manager” under union terms, or I’d be trying to start one), I am personally begging you to go to the International Workers of the World (www.iww.org) and find out what your options are. Here is your script:

“I was forced to quit my job at Target. When I told my story, someone who works as a supervisor in the food service sector told me that Target broke multiple labor laws and regulations in handling my case. Her* take is that I was forced to quit due to a hostile work environment that was caused by retaliation after I reported a manager for racial discrimination. She suggested I contact you for more information on how to proceed.”

They may request you pay dues before they can assist. It’s like $11 and it’s worth it. I will straight-up give it to you if you don’t have it to spare.

You are entitled to unemployment, because you were forced to quit rather than doing it of your own volition. You may also be entitled to lost pay. Don’t let this rest. Report it. The IWW can help you, or, if they can’t, they can tell you who can.
