So Tumblr’s rolling out the ability to pay to promote your own posts and I, personally, think this is very funny let me explain.

I saw at least one person complaining about tumblr becoming “pay to win” but I ask this: win what? what are we winning? Tumblr clout means nothing we all know this so I think it would actually be really funny if any individual aspiring tumblrina was shilling out thousands in a desperate bid for tumblr fame.

I was never a Homestuck but I heard the homestuck page did the same thing with selling out ad space in the banner ads to random people. which sounds like a cool recipe for some chaos, and no one’s shaken this hamster cage in a while so I’m open to it. The idea that you can pay $10 to make 2,500 people look at like, your dog, is kind of funny. also I’d rather look at another tumblr user’s dog than another ball-shaving advertisement.

Also, if I REALLY approach this with the best optimism and good faith and fingers-crossed-ness, it could be an accessible avenue for independent content creators to promote their work. Again, I’d rather see an indie LGBT writer promoting their book over the ballshaving ad.

That’s optimistic! Maybe I should hold my tongue in case this ends up opening the door to annoying spam or who knows. Maybe it’ll create some weird tension against people trying to promote themselves. I’m not pretending to see the future. I also have no skin in this so I’ve got no intention of using the feature. I just think this has the potential to AT LEAST be funny so I’m interested to see where it goes.

some catholics think theyre gonna be able to use it to convert tumblr users but in reality it would most likely end up like that one dumbass that tried to spread god to that isolated tribe despite all the warnings not to and got his dumb ass killed.
