I didn’t know what I thought Gundam was about but I wasn’t expecting topics like political assassination, hostile takeover and unethical weapons development
I thought this was transformers or something
THAT MEME WAS ABOUT GUNDAM??
Posts like this are always the sad sad way I learn that people just… know that things exist without ever getting even just… some sort of base idea of it. And it’s one thing with relatively obscure media, but… like… its GUNDAM.
And yah, the entire series, even the wierd/zany shows, are always about how War Is Bad:tm:.
This was such a weird post to come across my dash…
Wait hold on I have more… what do you think transformers is about?! No seriously. I get that the show sells toys, GUNDAM sells toys, that doesn’t mean there’s no STORY.
What the hell did you think the autobots and decepticons were fighting about? Did you… did you think they were literally play fighting? Like they see themselves as toys? Cuz like… transformers is also about a war. It’s not About War like how gundam is, its about a singular war with specific people, but like… just cuz something sells toys doesn’t mean there’s no story…
I don’t know how to explain to you that mecha anime is not mainstream media.
So there was a time when Gundam was considered pretty entry level as far as anime goes, but
- That was 15+ years ago
- That was heavily tied to Gundam airing on a mainstream American cable TV channel, something that isn’t relevant in your situation, since I know you said it never aired in the Netherlands
So Gundam used to be… not mainstream per se, but at least ubiquitous among American anime fans, but yeah, “used to be” and “American” are both key words here.
I used to play the shit out of the gundam chess/rock papers scissors flash game on cartoon networks website growing up
