This is so fucking funny, apparently “war bad” is liberal propaganda now??? Yes, war IS bad you fucking dipshit.
All Quiet on the Western Front (the original book) was written by a German WWI veteran who was determined to show just how utterly horrifying, disgusting, and senseless the war- and by extension all war- was. The book and its adaptations take great pains to portray the suffering endured by the common soldiers on both sides, who didn’t even really want to fight but were manipulated/forced into it by those in power. The book was even banned in Nazi Germany and the author had to flee the country because the Nazis believed the book was “anti-German” and would hamper their war efforts by showing the German people the real horrors of war.
So in some ways I guess history is repeating itself, more right-wing idiots are hating on this brilliant piece of anti-war media 🙄
#all quiet on the western front#it’s even funniest if you think about it because the og movie makes a point to show that the idealization of war came from somewhere#and not that it came out of the blue#the way the narrative handles it is all about manipulation and force of course#but throughout the movie there is also the constant reminder of the amount of blind pride and idealization of violence that lead to people#enrolling#a lot of the countries pre-wwi were excited for the beginnings of the war#mainly the Western powers#because there was already a lot of new technology being curated for war#there was already a lot of nationalism and pride over past warfare and empire history with their specific countries#the more wars start to distance themselves from pre-wwi’s present many people got exited over the idea that wwi would be a short battle#that would showcase the superiority and advancement of their countries#they were promised a short war#and what happened was a hellscape of disease/ blinding/ endless death/ and the loss of the enthusiasm they had before#this war went on for four years#people lost the reasons as to why they were there in the first place#because all in all what the government promised them was not a short war but a deadly one#and it reminds me of how the same war enthusiasm and war idealization happens in the USA#all of the eagerness to learning about military statistics and fighter jets and all#of this grand pride toward the USA in WWII/ the Cold War/ and even the Afghanistan War#and you begin to realize that this book and its adaptations are more important than ever#especially with the amount of US army money being put into Hollywood movies and fps shooters#because if this guy believes we can make a thrilling action movie with Storm of Steel#a book that recounts the most horrific scenes of wwi trench warfare#then that shit aint it
Absolutely brilliant tags, thank you so much for adding!
