wanna underline that it was Billy Zane doing the looking out for his co-star. James Cameron very famously directed Kate Winslet in a way that left her covered in bruises and gave her double pneumonia.
and good for him. he was a pretty big star at the time, Kate was almost an unknown, and James Cameron was, yanno, himself. so for Billy to stick up for her and respect her like that was very based and sexy.
Hey PS: you can’t destroy a table and everything on top of that just because you WANT to on a film set. There is such a thing as the set dressing and props departments. A lot of things are RENTED or ANTIQUE or BORROWED, especially for period pieces, with the intent that it goes back somewhere at the end of the day. If you’re an actor who forgets that he or she is just another person there with a job to do and you fuck up another department’s shit “for the art” or some other bullshit reason, not only will the whole crew hate you but you could literally fuck up the entire day’s schedule. What if he HAD ‘improvised’ it and destroyed a bunch of stuff for which there was zero replacement available? Or no chance to replace the good crystal with stunt glass built to break safely? You’ve not only A) created an intensely unsafe situation where if stunts were not planned for that day and you turned it into a stunt or a situation where the set medic needed to be there (aka flying glass) and that didn’t happen? Every union represented in that room AND the studio would be on your ass, but also B) created a one-shot take where if it needed to be redone that’s fucking impossible now because you fucked up the whole set you stupid idiot— now you, and the crew, will have to COME BACK on a NEW DAY and redo it all again with the appropriate props and safety personnel and that costs shittons of money and shows a blatant disregard for literally everyone and everything.
So hey, I’m proud of this guy for going through and explaining why exactly people saying all that were wrong and stepping up to prove he’s a respectful cast member. And also, people would do well to stop acting like shows and movies are a free for all where people can “just do anything” for “the sake of the reaction” or whatever because that’s not how it goes down- at least not on jobs that aren’t complete shitshows.
