Hi! I am new to the tumblr community, and I was wondering if you could give me any tips for starting my new blog?

alskylark:

Hey Welcome to Tumblr!

First of, wow, I feel quite honored that you came to me for advice! Thanks, hope I can sort of help you out.

Let’s see, the first tip that I can give you is about motivation: Start a blog because you want to have fun drawing it. DO NOT start a blog expecting to become famous the next day. Let me highlight this one, DO NOT expect to be swarmed by followers in one day ok? Most blogs, especially nowadays, don’t get many followers right of the bat, and they have to just slowly build up their fanbase.

Very few exceptions are lucky enough to have that high influx, but don’t rely on luck for that, you have to have certain key elements that sometimes are left to pure luck to get right, so yeh.

Hence, it’s critical that your main motivation is just to have FUN with your character or your story. Otherwise you’ll get bitter and angry, and drain yourself pretty quickly.

Just ask yourself these questions: Why do I want to start a blog? What do I want to achieve? What are my expectations? Are they realistic? Am I just jumping on the bandwagon for fun, or do I expect something out of it? What kind of blog would I have? Would I have fun with it? etc. And you’ll come to a pretty good conclusion about the whole ordeal!

As for the blog itself:

  • Try to keep it CLEAN, and by this I mean, AVOID making it a reblog fest ok? ESPECIALLY if your blog has an “ask” in its url. It’s VERY infuriating to see a nice url name with an ask in it and believe its an ask blog and then bam, all of it its random ass reblogs. No. Keep those to your mod/personal blog.
  • The theme you choose for your blog is also important, try to choose a normal-ish theme that won’t be too cluttery or too difficult to navigate, most ask blogs use your typical redux theme, which is a great theme for its simplicty and ease to modify. So spending half an hour to think where everything’s going to be in your blog could be a great idea! (And making nice headers/background/buttons!).
  • And finally, the ART, make sure you are comfortable drawing in the style you developed, I’m mentioning this only because you will have to draw, and probably a LOT, so being comfortable with your style is quite important to start of! Obviously you’ll evolve and become better, but having a headstart always helps.

Don’t worry if you think you don’t have good enough art, usually people don’t really care as long as the character is fun/relatable/interesting and/or the story is enthralling and entertaining! And the only way to know if it’s going to be like that is to just take courage and try!

Since by then you hopefully followed my advice and started a blog just for the fun of it, if it doesn’t become a hit at least you would’ve tried and you would’ve gotten some kicks out of it as well!

The key is to try, learn from your mistakes, and try again yo! And furthermost, have fun with it c:

Also, you should be open to criticism. Whenever people point out flaws, make sure you take note of them so that you can fix them.Don’t take it as an attack because mor likely than not, the person giving criticism is trying to help you.

The worst thing you can do is refuse and criticism and advice because then you will never improve.

Remember, nothing is perfect and there is always room for improvement.
