What if that statue was once a person who would alway go to tis park pith his dog and played fetch but gradually became older and had to eventually play it from his bench. Then one day, he encountered a cockatrice while his dog was fetching the stick and was turned to a statue so now the dog will fetch his stick and put it in his hand every time it halls out in hopes that it will turn him back to normal.
