The entire point of TLJ!Luke is that “Luke Skywalker would never”

That is why he is so deeply ashamed of what happened, because the Luke Skywalker, Legendary Jedi Master, hero of the rebellion, would never hurt his nephew—but Luke nearly did, because Luke isn’t like a bigger than life persona, he’s just a person, who has momentary lapses in judgment due to deeply shocking force visions, who tried to take that back as soon as he realized that no, he would never, but it was too late!
