Steven Universe: *blows up Russia*

bloodsbane:

“Message Received” accomplished something I almost didn’t believe could possibly be managed with such grace. I’m really geeking out over this episode!

There’s always been the worry that Peridot’s ‘redemption arc’ might feel too forced or rushed. She makes for a great, entertaining villain, but I think it’s been generally accepted that since she’s in Steven Universe, redemption was at least highly plausible.

And while I wouldn’t call this total redemption, it is about as effective. The best part of it is that Peridot came to this on her own terms! In ways that totally line up with her motivations as a character!

I love how the episode is framed from the beginning to make it sound like Peridot was definitely deciding to ‘’’betray’’’ Steven and the others - that she hadn’t learned anything, she was too loyal to her diamond and Homeworld, had only been distracted by their bonding. Once you re-watch the episode, though, you can see how she’s actually viewing things, what she actually means.

Peridot has indeed changed her mind about Earth, in that she does think it’s worth protecting. But not due to sentiment or emotional attachment - at least, not wholly. Peridot believes Earth and it’s resources can be valuable to Homeworld. She honestly doesn’t think the Crystal Gems can ultimately save and protect Earth, but Peridot believes her ‘rational and reasonable’ Yellow Diamond, a gem she obviously reveres and is devoted to, can solve all their problems properly. Yellow Diamond, with her immense reach and power (and even moreso, her logical mind) can do what the Crystal Gems simply cannot.

image

There’s a reason they’re in charge. They’re objectively better than us! …Especially my diamond, Yellow Diamond. The most perfect, the most reasonable, rational, efficient decider ever to exist in the universe!

Peridot believes her objective leader will understand the logic behind Peridot’s suggestions, be reasoned with, and in this way Peridot can still save Earth, the Crystal Gems, and Steven.

image

Alright, look. I have a plan - allow me to explain? …I’ve figured it out! You simple clods keep trying to protect the Earth, but you cant do anything right! I let myself get carried away too… But don’t you see? None of that matters! All that matters is that I’m of use to Yellow Diamond! This planet can be of use to Yellow Diamond! I must contact her to reveal what I’ve discovered!

The following lines, with Steven accusing the diamonds of only wanting to hallow out/destroy earth and Peridot agreeing, saying “Yes! That’s the point!” definitely add makes what she’s saying sound bad, but now I think it was more of a “Yes, you’re right, but that’s why I have to contact her, to tell her there are options!”

Then we have the little fight and chase, littered with moments where Peridot accuses the others of ‘not knowing what they’re doing’ and ‘being bested by logic’. Then she struggles with Steven:

image

You don’t get it either! This [caring, hoping, wanting] is your whole problem! Your emotions rule out reason! I will do what has to be done!

Peridot isn’t implying that ‘what has to be done’ is for Earth to be destroyed. She’s saying the Crystal Gems/Steven’s way of doing things are just wrong, they don’t work, and that she knows the real, logical solution to their problem, even if they don’t like it.

Then she speaks to Yellow Diamond. She sort of explains what happens (purposefully omitting the bit about the Crystal Gems still existing, despite YD specifically asking who crashed her ship.) Then Peridot does what made me realize where the direction of this was actually leading: when YD says she’ll send a ship to pick up Peridot, to take her off of Earth and save her from the Cluster, Peridot continues on to suggest they stop the Cluster completely.

But Yellow Diamond ‘[doesn’t] care about potential and resources’. She just wants Earth to DIE, and she wants her geo-weapon.

And… that’s not very logical. That’s not reasonable, or objective. It’s not what Peridot expects. She doesn’t expect her Diamond to act this way. She doesn’t expect her to be wrong.

This is what’s so brilliant about this episode, I think - Peridot stays aggressively true to her character throughout the entire thing. Peridot formed her own opinion about Earth and what should be done, and she came to the conclusion through logic and reason. She thinks, surely, her Diamond will agree! But when Yellow Diamond clearly doesn’t care, doesn’t even bother to consider the benefits, is only interested in doing things how she wants

Peridot can’t accept it. Because she has come to a logical conclusion, and that means Yellow Diamond is wrong.

It’s such an amazing turn, and I absolutely adore it! Peridot isn’t swayed simply by the efforts of Steven trying to be friendly. Another way things could’ve gone is if Yellow Diamond forced Peridot to stay on Earth, or threatened her in a way that made Peridot want to stay. But no, instead Peridot chooses to stand against Yellow Diamond for the simple fact that, based on Peridot’s logic, Yellow Diamond is acting illogically, unreasonably, and is wrong about the Earth.

I won’t do it!! I can tell you with certainty that there are things on this planet worth protecting!”

“What do you know about the Earth!?”

“Apparently, more than you! You CLOD!!”

ohmymetta:

I would believe in rose quartz=pink diamond if someone could give me a reasonable explanation for 4 things:

  • why doesn’t steven know already? Shouldn’t the gems have told him that his mother was a ruler who turned away from her empire because she believed that everyone was equal?
  • If the gems haven’t told him for a good reason, surely he would have noticed a GIANT MURAL OF HIS MOTHER in “It could have been great” and like…. commented on it?
  • The other diamonds are HUGE. And as far as we can tell kinda spindly. Rose is tall but not as tall as they are, and shes nice and round.
  • Seriously explain the gem inconsistancy. Now we’ve seen that the other 3 gems have diamonds shaped like ♢, why would rose’s be the only one shaped like a circle? I used to subsribe to the theory that rose had a gem shaped like  💎 and we just see it from above, but now even that would be inconsistant from the rest of the diamonds.

The more I think about it, the more I’m convinced that rose CAN’T be pink diamond, but I would really like to hear other theories about possible explanation for these points. There’s a lot of good evidence FOR the rose diamond theory and I used to believe, so I haven’t written it off entirely yet.

1) They didn’t even tell steven they were aliens until lapis arrived. And they didn’t even explain anyhting about the diamonds. Peridot did.

2) We’ve really only seen ONE diamond. Blue diamond should not be counted yet as her appearance in the garnet origin story does not match her lunar mural like yellow diamonds does.

image
image

Also, the only other place we’ve seen hints of there being four diamonds has the statue corrosponding with the pink one destroyed.

image

It is entirely possible that the Diamonds of homeworld attempted to destroy evidence of pink diamond for her treachery.

3) Gems can shape shift. They can also choose their basic form when regenerating. Rose could have regenerated smaller (which is not the same as shape shifting as it would be permenant until her next regeneration)

4) Same as point 2. We don’t actually know if blue diamonds cut is that shape. until we see another diamond that isn’t in a flashback, I think it’s still up for grabs.

Lunar Sea Spiral Backstory

gearxl:

In the episode “It Could’ve Been Great,” Peridot explains that there were supposed to be numerous Kindergartens and Spires. This would further explain my theory of Lapis’ past. Lapis wasn’t part of Blue Diamond, but she was important to Blue Diamond.

First of all, the statue of the Lunar Goddess is actually Blue Diamond.

image

It appears she is holding one of the spheres that was seen in a room with water on the moon base.

image

So in the episode “Message Received,” we see Yellow for the first time (yay!) and are also able to see her base, which looks a great deal like the moon base. Since there are murals, like the ones in Serious Steven, which just further proves that that pyramid was White/Pink Diamond’s hideout, it is safe to say that the moon base is Blue Diamond’s old base.

Now the Spire’s get their names for each ambassador that stays there. For instance, Lapis lived at the Lunar Sea Spire.

Lunar = Relating to the Moon Goddess, Blue Diamond.

Sea = Water ambassador, Lapis Lazuli.

Now if Sapphire had a spire, it may be called the Lunar Polar Spire, since she controls ice.

Everything points to Rose being Pink Diamond regardless of size and name, and here’s why

shatterstag:

everybody is theorizing on whether or not rose was pink diamond or not and specifically using the example that she’s not big enough

has everybody forgotten that a gem’s form is meaningless? gems can appear however they like (to a limit, I’m sure). Pearl and Garnet in particular have gone through countless changes of not only costume but also physical appearance, many of which are pretty major (consider, initial garnet vs our garnet).

A gem’s physical appearance is very much based on their self confidence, their intent, their purpose, their maturity, their focus in the moment of reforming. We see that Amethyst choses a small form because she was ‘born’ that way but also because it’s most comfortable for her personality. when she reforms she demonstrates that it’s possible for gems to reform as being bigger than their ‘natural’ state, but it’s especially hard for amethyst because she’s overcooked. by this we can also assume that gems can reform to appear smaller.

If you are Pink Diamond, and you have splinted from Homeworld and your dominion to try and protect earth, and your most important forces consist almost entirely of hundreds of gems who want individuality and respect regardless of class and view value in the life of others, why would you want to appear as the dominating, huge, imposing Pink Diamond of Homeworld? Rose wanted to dismantle the class gap between gems so that everybody was equal. It would be completely counter productive and hypocritical for her to appear as her Pink Diamond form when she and the earth rebellion are fighting against the diamonds.

So why wouldn’t she choose a less intimidating form? If she is Pink Diamond, it’s more than likely she has the power and focus to change her appearance drastically, and keep it for millennia, in comparison to Amethyst who was already born abnormally tiny and had difficulty keeping a larger form. Not only does she become much more relatable to the crystal gems and the earth rebellion but it’s another way to sever her tie with Homeworld and her fellow diamonds.

The same concept can be used with her name. Rose abandoned Homeworld and the diamond authority and wanted to cut all ties with them. She lead the rebellion not as their overlord but as a soldier, an equal, one who did not treat her friends and warriors as lesser in cast than her. Why would you want to keep the name Pink Diamond when you were no longer part of the diamond authority? Why not take up a different name to show your split from Homeworld and your previous existence as a ruler and dictator? Why not choose one of the most common and abundant stones on earth, quartz, and why not choose the one stone that is most associated with healing, love and compassion?

We have never seen a complete and detailed image of Pink Diamond. In every situation where it would have been possible to see a full image of Pink Diamond, it has not been shown to the audience (’It Could Have Been Great’ for example). We know that at some point after Rose left homeworld and the Gems were fought off Earth, the Homeworld gems removed Pink Diamond from any designs. If Rose was not meant to be Pink Diamond, why would Pink Diamond’s existence and appearance be so secret to the viewers? EVERYTHING we have seen points to Rose being Pink Diamond. The idea that because she is not big enough and has a different name are total moot points based on what has already been established time and time again in the series. The only solid point that could disprove this is the shape of Rose’s gem.
