hey tumblr… I have a question
can I just… can I just watch a cartoon, please
like, you know, a cartoon? like on tv? like the little moving drawings? yeah, can I just watch and enjoy one of those cartoons, for once, please?
can you just let me
am I allowed to just
watch a cartoon and have fun
can I have fun watching a cartoon, please, tumblr, please god can you let me have fun watching a cartoon, please god just let me watch a cartoon and enjoy it and have fun, please, please dear god, please
this is one of those posts that’s either “i hate that i can’t watch The Loud House anymore without thinking about how much the fandom loves incest” or “saying some parts of Steven Universe are racist is ridiculous and harmful to me personally” and there’s no in between
this is a post where I want to watch a cartoon on tv and enjoy it and have fun without feeling like I have to ask permission from tumblr to see if it’s okay for me to do so
please god let me watch a cartoon
I felt like the original point of the post was pretty clear but it’s approaching 1k notes and there’s a lot of replies that are (sarcastically?) saying “no” or even some people earnestly saying “no one’s stopping you from enjoying what you want”
but tumblr has a really bad habit of shitting on people who want to enjoy a piece of media, or the piece of media itself, and actively condemning the whole thing. this tumblr hive mind conveniently forgets that 1. perspectives are not always black and white and people enjoy things for a variety of reasons, 2. people are allowed to grow and learn different things and develop their own tastes, and 3. you can dislike something without bullying people who enjoy that thing.
if you earnestly believe that no one is doing this, please listen to me; tumblr fandom culture is terrible and people are hurt by this stuff all the time. even recently someone at a convention was hurt with unsafe baked goods (cookies with needles) because someone disliked a ship someone else created art for. whether or not that content is ‘problematic’ is a different conversation, but generally older fandom people remember a time where people understood a distinction between liking a fiction and discussing the various themes explored in it, and genuinely believing those things are okay in the real world. artists get bullied into attempting suicide on here all the time, and a lot of fans feel embarrassed, uncomfortable, or threatened by the behavior of other fans who engage in that behavior.
I would like for fans to be able to watch something and participate in the fandom without being bullied. that’s all.
