And now because my mind has wandered, I give you an AU of an AU

Based on @nicolaswildes fascinating Zistopia AU, itself based on the original script, I’ve tooled around with a pred-prey swap of various moments from the story.

Starring Nick Wilde as the overworked, prejudiced cop with something to prove and Judy Hopps as the troubled, weary ex-con
Also guest-starring notorious crime boss “Chief” Bogo and his three hamster attendants

Zootopia- the Early Concepts

Zootopia (also known as Zootropolis) is an animated 3D movie from Disney Animation Studios, released in 2016. It’s a classic buddy-cop style film, focusing on the team of police bunny (Judy Hopps, voiced by  Ginnifer Goodwin) and a con-artist fox (Nick Wilde, voiced by Jason Bateman) as they attempt to uncover a conspiracy on their island that is linked to the disappearance of predators. Praised by fans and critics alike, Zootopia is held as one of the hallmarks of Disney’s modern animation.

However, Zootopia went through numerous iterations before it settled on the final film that was released. Initially conceived as a spy film, centered on a wolf named “Jack Savage”, it was then shifted to a police procedural with Nick Wilde in the lead with Hopps as his sidekick. Close to the end of production, the team reversed the film’s role and re-drafted the screenplay, and in late 2014 Zootopia was born. In the middle iteration, many of the subtleties the final film is praised for were not present, and the predator/prey interactions were much more obvious, with predators wearing control collars.

“ Maybe this was not a wise idea.
Automated shock collars were part of Zootopia’s original concept.
Looks like Judy dug up a relic of a bygone era.

Zootopia (2016) dir. Byron Howard and Rich Moore

It is so important to me that a kids movie had this conversation in it

This movie gave an entire generation of children a script for how to handle this issue. It showed marginalized kids that it’s okay to call people out, and gave them a script for how to do so firmly but with compassion

It also gave privileged kids a script for how to respond to being called out– which is to listen, have compassion, apologize, and never do the problematic thing again

It also managed to convey this to all the adults who brought their kids to the movies, and all the rest of us who just went because we wanted to

This scene is so important to me

Happy Easter
